SPDY vs HTTP
So on the whole, HTTP is too old and is inefficient for transferring single files.. so is this a reason for everyone to make the switch immediately?
The Good:
-SPDY encrypts all data transfers. So no more worrying about those https urls or putting :443 at the end. literally all URLs will be encrypted.
-SPDY gZips all data transfers. On-the-fly data zipping will mean that file sizes are much smaller, so the world wide wait becomes that bit more speedy.
The Bad:
-Making a faster protocol actually isn’t that hard.. The hard part is creating a suitable upgrade path with decent backward compatibility. Will we see SPDY:// urls in the future.. how is this going to work with older browsers?
-All the zipping and encrypting requires a lot of processing power (relatively speaking) Although this won’t be too much a problem in the short term.. there is no way mobile platforms will be able to cope with current hardware specs.
One thing is for sure.. things are surely getting a whole lot more complex.. IPv6, SPDY protocols all reflect the growing complexity of the Internet.
