Internet Reaches Almost 200 Million Domain Registrations

The internet ended the fourth quarter of 2009 with at least a total 192 million domain names registered, according to latest findings by Verisign in their Domain Name Industry brief.

The total includes all of the top level domain names and is an increase of about 15 million on the end of 2008. About 11 million of the domain names registered in 2009 came in the last quarter, averaging at 3.7 million registrations per month in these last 3 months.

A large portion of the total domain name registrations come from the base .com and .net domain name extensions, accounting for almost 100 million of total domain name registrations.
