ICANN Head To Visit China Regarding Request For New Domain Extension

The head of the global Internet addressing authority at ICANN is expected to visit officials in China after ICANN received a request for a new domain name ending in ‘.china’ written in Chinese characters.

The outcome of these meetings will be interesting following China’s recent tightening of internet security which has been seen by many as further censorship of the country’s people. Also, Google’s recent announcement that they will no longer be adhering to China strict censorship rules has cast a lot of light on the situation in China.

A few other countries are also in the process of applying for localised domain extensions with relevant characters, with Russia and Egypt among those already in the next stage of the process.
