How to successfully transfer a domain name?

There can be a whole host of reasons to transfer a domain name. Maybe you have sold the domain or the site is moving to a different server. There are number of considerations to make when moving a domain to ensure minimum disruption to your site and business as a whole. The procedure does differ depending on the level of the domain i.e. if a .com domain is being transferred then a code is required from the hosts to authorise the transfer. This can take up to five working days in many cases and time should be allowed for this.

In the first instance it is always good practice to ensure that the WHOIS information of a domain name is correct. If a transfer is initiated and these details are incorrect this could stall the move of the domain very quickly and could cause a lot of ownership issues.

Once you have confirmed these are correct I would advise changing nameservers first this normally doesn’t take very long but in some instances could take up to 48hrs. This way the site has minimum disruption. I would then tackle the movement of the domain registrar by changing the IPS tag. This again can take time but in some instances has been done in an hour or two. Changing nameservers just ensure everything is pointing to the correct place and should keep down time to minimum.

However ensure that all email addresses and domains are set ready on the new hosting account to ensure a simple transfer.
